Happy Birthday Alyssa

So I'm on my way to Miami. Literally! I am using the internet in the SKY. Should land a little over an hour now. YAY! It better be nice there. I want to get a fierce TAN when I get back to the city.

I closed A Chorus Line yesterday. It was amazing. I was also blessed to have my best friend Kelli and her boyfriend Sandy drive up from Manhattan to see the show and drive me back home. It was so fun having them and the road trip back to the city was so much fun. It was sad closing the show. I really loved my experience there. During the last song, "What I Did For Love" I was bawling. Mostly because I sure do love what I do and if God forbid of anything happens to me that happens to my Character Paul in the show I would be devastated. Paul falls during a tap combination and hurts himself really bad and doesn't get the job in the end. Not sure what I would do if I couldn't dance again. Sure, I have some ideas but for now I love performing and I want to keep doing it. Another reason why I was probably crying was because I am officially unemployed again. UGHH! I don't know what the future has instore for me but I still have faith in that its going to be good. I have to get a job when I get back and hope and pray I audition for something good and get it. Back to the grind as we say. But enough of that....

I am going HOME to MIAMI! I am so excited. My niece Alyssa is turning 8 and is getting baptized tonight. I am so happy and proud of her. She is such a sweet and kind soul. I was asked to sing at the baptized. I am so privileged to be there. And blessed that I even got a flight that gets there just in time since my original flight was canceled this morning. I'll barely make it but it should work out fine. My beautiful niece Alyssa last year on her 7th Birthday!

I also can't wait to want to relax, have some family time, tan, and eat some yummy food. Should be fun!

A Chorus Line Miracle

Don't be MAD people...for the few that read my blog. It's been such a long since I have blogged and for that I apologize. Since coming out here to Forestbugh to start A Chorus Line things have not stopped. We only had a week and a half of rehearsal with some scheduling challenges which made it difficult to get everyone together to learn everything and review. But we got it together and opened with few minor bumps.
To give you a better understanding how it all works here I will try to explain. We call this type of theatre Summer Stock and what that means is that the theatre does multiple shows through out the summer. And they open the shows one after another. So while a show is running another show is rehearsing. Now, they have here what they call a Resident Company. They found 16 college age kids at a huge cattle call auditions that they have every year regionally. These kids who are NOT part of the Actor's Union stay all summer and participate in most of the shows of the summer. They also do what they call a Cabaret every night after the show. Which they do in the Tavern attached to the theatre. The Resident Company serve food and drinks while doing 2 short acts of a well crafted themed showcase of great songs. And they have a different Cabaret with every main stage show that runs. Every main stage show runs about 2 weeks. So now running is A Chorus Line with "The Oscar Goes To..." Cabaret which showcases all songs that are associated with movies that won OSCARS.

Anyway, along with that the Resident Company also have to do a children show every Thursday and Saturday. This year they are doing Seussical the musical. They are double cast so they usually only have to do one children show a week. So rehearsals are interesting cause they usually have rehearsal for the next Cabaret while in rehearsal for the next main stage show. Then they do the main stage show that night with a children show once a week. So needless to say they have a ALOT of work. Oh and to tack on to that. They also have to do Chores around the theatre. Like set up the Tavern for the Cabaret or clean up the theatre or grounds of the theatre. They are working these kids ragged. I am so lucky to be part of the Union because I don't have to do any of that. I just do this one show then I'm done. But it is definatley a great experience for these college kids to do alot of shows in a short period of time. They will look back on this time and will appreciate the things they've learned.

I sure wish I had a job all summer though but that's not the case. I AM grateful that I have this JOB and I am having a blast with it. Paul is a wonderful role even though emotionally draining every night. I love doing this show and will be sad when it's all over. I will also miss living in the CATSKILLS. Its so relaxing out here. I know I won't be missing the BUGS. The other day a huge Dragon Fly the size of my hand fly on stage while we were on The Line and landed on one of the actors. The audience was laughing so hard. The actor finally slapped it to kill it and it landed on the stage and was distracting the rest of that act. But that's the charm that comes with doing Summer Stock Theatre out in a barn in the Catskills.

Ok, I think this blog is way to long. Sorry 'bout it! I'll try to post more often so I don't have to write a book every time.

NIGHT OF STARS!

My friend Scott called and said he can get us free tickets to The 55th Annual Drama Desk Awards. For those who don't what that is. Its like what the Golden Globes are to Oscars.....Drama Desk Awards are to the TONY'S.

When I heard he could get me free tickets I jumped on it and said YES! We were to sit in the Orchestra Pit to fill space. These seats were right in front of where the STARS sit. So we were there to mask any early exiters and those gone to accept their awards. We were supposed to be a young good looking audience and that we were.

It was so much fun to be in the room with so many creative people. The Broadway/Theatre community is small but have alot of heart. I jest felt blessed to had the opportunity to be apart of it that night.

So now to the fun part. So many STAR sighting. I was literally sitting in front of Ben Vereen and Ann Hathaway. I think I was even blocking some of their view...lol. Then across from me was Micheal Douglas ans Catherine Zeta-Jones. OH MY! I was freaking when I saw them. Then up from them were Liev Shreiber and Scarlet Johansson. OMG! Freaking out even more. The of course there was Angela Lansbury sitting next to Catherine Zeta-Jones. Patti LuPone was hosting. Crobin Blue and Brooke Shields were presenters amongst other really BIG Broadway stars. We were so close to the stage I could almost touch them. I had such an amazing time being in the same room as these people. I could get used to that. What do I have to do????

I am glad I had that amazing opportunity to go to this amazing event. Next.... THE TONY'S! I mean it's named after me. It's only logical ;)

So my friend Ali Ewoldt who played one of my Maria's on tour with my in West Side Story graduated from Yale University. You know, that little Ivy League school in CT. She was singing at a concert for a benefit for Yale called Sing For Hope. This benefit was organized by Alumns form Yale to give back to the community. Check out SingForHope.org if you are interested in learning more. At this concert Ali and other Yale Alums who have been successful in Musical Theatre or other wise performed at a concert to raise money. Among them were Dick Cavett, Emmy Award winning writer, performer, and host of the Dick Cavett show, Sam Tsui, the YouTube sensation who has been on Oprah and other Talk Shows, and many other past and recent Broadway performers. It was a great night. I was excited she invited me. I also enjoyed myself at the pre and post parties. Got to network and meet some great people.

I just want to take this time to wish my MOM and my 2 sisters a very Happy Mother's Day. These 3 ladies have been there for me in several occasions. They have supported me and one of them gave me life...and for that I am grateful. I truly cherish this life that I do have. I sure want to make them proud and I hope that they are. So its going on 4 months on being back from tour. I have been pretty busy. It's been nice. But now that the audition season is slowing down. I am getting bored and more poor. I need a J.O.B. I would prefer in the theatre but right now I think I will have to settle for anything that pays in that GREEN stuff. Anything will do. I do have a job coming up in July but for only 3 weeks. I'm grateful for that job

I have been seeing the dentist also. I finally got my root canal and crown done. So that is over. Woosh! I need more work done but I don't have the cash to finish it all. I found out that if you qualify you can get Invisilign from k9 to k9 for really cheap like $1,000 bucks. I was really excited cause I wanted to do it. But I found out that I didn't qualify due to too much crowding and I would need a full mouth ortho for $4000. UGHH!! I can't afford that! I want to get it done so bad. I will do anything. I hate the thought of borrowing money but I'm at the point of looking into it.

Anyway, past few weeks have been good. Just auditioning and working on getting my body into shape for my next project in A Chorus Line. I also had the opportunity to see a good friend of mine April in Philly(the birth place of out country). She just married in Utah and I was not able to attend because of the cost of flights but she was in Philly the week after because her NEW Husband's work. So I took a cheap bus to Philly and hung out for the day. We had a great time and had some good food. YUMMY! I wish April and Kevin a very blessed marriage.

Overall it was a good day. It started at 5am. I was so tired when I finally got home. But well worth it. The run was to support the Special Olympics. It felt good to run for a purpose. I also wanted to do this for my family. Maybe inspire them to be a little healthier (as I munch on some Nachos) lol!

So yesterday a friend IM'd me on gchat and wanted to know if I wanted to go to a taping of THE MARRIAGE REF in 10 min. Its a new show on NBC created by Jerry Seinfeld that tapes here in NYC. So last minute I got dressed and got in a taxi. We got there just in time and there we were in the audience. WE had such a blast. It was really fun seeing the celebrities do there thing and improve. There was a guy on the panel that I didn't know but became his fan. HE was so funny! I can't say who he was cause I had to sign something saying that I wont say who will be on. It should air in like 3-4 weeks. I can't wait to see what they keep and what they cut because there was some really riskay things that were said and ad-libed. lol. I love NYC for this. Just randomly go to a taping of a show and FOR FREE. Love it!

So I GOT the JOB! Its only a 3 week gig in JULY in a small theatre in the middle of the forest about 100 miles outside the CITY in NY. But the kicker is that I will be playing the role of PAUL in A CHORUS LINE!

I am so excited to play that part. First the dance is incredible in it and his monologue(story) is pretty incredible. So I am excited. Paul has been a dream role of mine and I feel lucky to play it.

So here are the details.

Rehearsals start June 24th
Performances: July 6-18

I am still auditioning and trying to line other things up. So even thought this is great I am still pounding the pavement and hoping for a BIG job.

Oh and by the way, SPRING IS HERE in NYC and it's BEAUTIFUL! The weather is fantastic. I wore SHORTS today. I am a happy BOY!

Audition Season

So I have been crazy busy with auditions. Everyone is auditioning for there summer shows and there are also alot of Broadway shows looking. I figure since I have been gone for so long I need to put my face out there and audition for everything. I've had some good auditions and had many bad ones. Nothing so far in the horizon but I am still hopeful.

In the mean time I am enjoying not working and enjoying the city. The weather is finally getting nice. So I try my best to be outside as much as I can. The other day after a crazy morning and afternoon of auditions I walked from 34th street to my home on 111th Street. That is over 70 blocks. It was fun! I am an outside boy. Being indoors and lazy can be nice sometimes but I would rather be outside soaking up the sun and being active. I am from Miami after all.

So, my focus right now are on auditions. Send good and positive vibes. I NEED a job ;)

First POST BACK in NYC!

So its been a month and a bit since I have been back from tour and I am loving it. I have been busy getting my feet on the ground so that is why I haven't blogged in a while. I have my new apartment(pics to come soon) and I have been auditioning alot. Things have been really busy since I've been back which has been nice. I have also had opportunities to catch up with some friends and evaluate some of my life goals.

Tomorrow is my "real" birthday so I think I will just hang out run some errands then have some dinner with some friends. I am turning 31! AHHH! But I feel great where I am. Healthy and doing fine. Bring it on 31! Bring it on!

Coming To an End...

So it's Saturday morning and I am getting ready to do 2 shows. After today we have another 2 show day then we are DONE. It's been a ride. We got a letter from our producer the other that really put this tour in perspective.

Letter from Michael Brenner:

Dear Friends, On Sunday the first leg of this season's WEST SIDE STORY will end - after having performed 180 great shows to raving audiences and press around the world.

To get to the 16 cities where we have performed in the last 31 weeks, we used 3 different scenic sets simultaneously leapfrogging around the globe via sea, air and over land.

To get permission to perform in the 8 countries we went, we filed over 650 work permits and visa. We booked over 800 flights and countless coaches, cars and trains.

We used nearly 3,500 hotel nights (meaning a single person could live in a hotel for almost 10 years).

The tour travelled over 60,000 km (37,300 miles) which equals more than 1.5 times around the equator - truly justifying bearing the title "World Tour".

Thank you very much for all your passion, hard effort and great team work to make this happen. We are looking forward to the 2nd leg and wishing you all a very Happy New Year!

I Just saw this moveie last night and I love it. It was so intense. I was very upset at most of the movie. I just feel like I know Precious the girl in the movie. People who have to go through that kind of hardship and trials in life really shouldn't have to. It really made me appreciate the quality of life that I have now. This movie even though does end with some sort of hope it still leaves you thinking and maybe a little empty. I do suggest it though.

One more week left and only 8 shows left. Then I go back to NYC. I am excited to get back.

I can't help but to reflect on 2009 and see everything I did. What a year! That just gets me even more excited to see what this year has in-store for me. I am excited to tackle it. I do have a good feeling this is going to be a great year.

I will move into a new apartmetn right on Central Park North which technically is Harlem. I will have my own room living with 2 other LDS guys. I will be hitting the auditions hard and probably collecting unemployment until I find a job. Other than that I am just going to see what life has to offer.

Right when I get back I think I am going to need to detox for a while and ease my way back to "normal" life with auditions, church, and friends. With touring and this role of Chino it will be nice to not do anything for a while. I think when I get back I will just focus on getting my room together. Paint, get furniture, decorate and stuff like that so I can make it my OWN. I am so OVER having a ROOMMATE! No offense to any roommates I had over the year but it will be nice to have my own space ;)

Here is to finishing a great tour where I grew alot as an actor and as a person. Seeing all these amazing places has truly changed me. I am so blessed. This world is full of great places and people. I will never forget this experience.

So here is the furniture I think I am going to buy from a friend which I won't be able to get until Feb. But patience is a virtue. I guess I will be sleeping in an empty room on an air mattress until then ;)Here is my new bedroom that I will be empty when I get there Jan 11th.Some other pics of the apartment.

Christmas Miracle

My nephew, Chad, gets in today after a huge obstacle. SNOW! He is doing a mini Europe trip starting with Paris then Amsterdam, visiting me then off to London. But he was snowed-in in Paris for a couple days and we were scrared he wasn't going to make it here to Amsterdam. But eventually made by taking an 8.5 hour bus. The snow has subsided and he is now on his way to Schevenigen a town outside of Amsterdam where I am performing. He is having dinner with me today and then coming to the evening show. I can't wait! On Christmas Eve the cast is having a big dinner and then for Christmas we have 2 shows. Chad will see the show again Christmas night. He making it here is a mini Christmas miracle for me. YEAH!

I am so happy to have some family with me on Christmas. It means the world even though I will still miss my family in Miami.

It's Beginning To Look Alot Like Christmas

So what comes with the Christmas Season....STRESS. A couple things. The internet situation is kind of messy. It costs $35 for 24 hours of internet at the hotel. But we get internet at the theatre but sometimes you get kicked off because so many people are trying to use it. This is a problem when you are in the thick of trying to find an apartment in NYC. You have to act fast and make sure you are on top if it.

I am getting really close in finding a place. A couple of them fell through but still holding on to a couple. I swear this is like auditioning. What makes this really tough is that I am overseas and can't meet these people I want to room with in person. So Skype or emails are my only form of communication along with my friends who go check out the apartments for me.

Anyway, keep your fingers crossed I find a place before I land in NYC in almost less than a month.

It's begeinging to look alot like Christmas though. Starting SNOWING here. Its BEAUTIFUL!

Our last stop of the first leg of our tour. Which now that I say that I guess I should announce my decision in NOT coming back for the 2nd leg. The 2nd leg starts the end of March through May and going to Bordeaux, France, Trieste, Italy and Malaysia(truly Asia). I have my reasons for not signing back on. Some financial, some personal and some just falling my heart. It has nothing to do with me not liking the show or my part. It has been a great couple of months that I will for surely be sad to see end. But with that being said I am excited for the future and what lies ahead.

Being back is fun. Bremen, Germany was great. We were there for 2 weeks and what a cute town. They really know how to do Christmas here. They had Christmas Markets all over the city and they were nothing I have ever scene. Just a beautiful Christmas celebration with a typical cozy European town as your backdrop. The shows went great. We celebrated one of our castmates decision to get married. We had I guess what you will call a minture bachlerate party. Where some people stripped and we gave gifts. She is leaving tour a little early to go get ready for her wedding in Hawaii on Jan 10th(I believe).

So today we bused it to Scheveningen, Netherlands. Just about an hour outside of Amsterdam and IT IS COLD!!! Freezing to be exact. I just checked the weather and it is 25 degrees ℉. This town is a BEACH RESORT. So I think that factors into the weather being a tad bit cooler than normal. Internet is really expensive at the HOTEL. I just paid 22 Euro($34) for 24 hrs. We are hoping the company does something about this. Because it's the Holidays and we need our internet to communicate with our loved ones. Speaking of loved ones. My nephew CHAD is coming to visit in about 6 days. I am so excited. He is touring a little around Europe and stopping by Amsterdam. I am excited to hang out with him this Christmas and have him see me perform. That means alot to me.

I have been busy lately looking for an apartment back in NYC. And actually I gotta go because I have a friend checking an apartment right now for me and I want to call her while she is doing a walk through. Later.

Surprise Thanksgiving

Some of you might know and some of you might not. But I had Thanksgiving OFF from tour. Our kind producers surprised us a while back after a show and told us they will be sending us all HOME for Thanksgiving week since there were no shows scheduled. I have kept it a secret since then because I knew I wanted to SURPRISE my family. That's why I didn't make mention of it in the blog.

So the week of Thanksgiving I went to NYC for a day to take care of some business then I flew to MIAMI to see my family. The only family member who knew about was my 25 year old nephew Chad who was my accomplice. He picked me up from the airport and then we went to surprise the family starting with my older sister Betsy at work then my other sister Yolanda and her kids at home then lastly my mom and dad.

This visit was so much fun and was something I really needed. It was about a year and a half since the last time I saw them. Catching up and seeing my niece and nephews so grown was a treat. I mean my 12 year old nephew ANDREW has an iPhone. CRAZY! And Alyssa my niece is so beautiful and getting so big.

Funny story time. You ready? Brace yourself! Embrace yourself while you are at it.

So during the show the craziest thing ever happened to us. I never experienced this. We are in the War Council Scene/Post "Cool" scene. This is where the Sharks and Jets are having the BIG meeting on where we are going to RUMBLE. So all the boys are on stage and its intense. Bernardo and Riff have decided to "rumble" under the "highway." While this is happening we were noise and alot of commotion coming from the audience. Then we hear a lady scream something in GERMAN and all I heard was "Alo Alo Alo....STOOOOP!" And I was so scared. The only thing I could think of is we are UNDER ATTACK. I have been watching way too many scary movies lately I guess. Anyway, so there is alot of talking and I see ushers with flashlights and people getting up. Meanwhile, the scene is still happening and the 2 saying their lines are still "in it." I was not "in it" I was ready to run my booty off stage. But finally the commotion stops and we finish the scene. I was surprised we didn't stop the show. As we exited the stage I was in shock of what just happened. I thought maybe somebody had a heart attack or fainted.

We later found out that there was a pregnant woman who started vomiting BLOOD all over the place....getting it on a couple of people. Later that show when you looked out in the audience there was a hole where the lady was and the people she threw up on. Sounds horrible, huh? I hope her and that baby is ok. Gotta love LIVE theatre!

This week has been going well. My energy seems to be sustaining. I have been sleeping in more and drinking more water which seems to be helping.

So update on music. I have been looking for some music cause my music library is getting TIRED. And I am found a love for Rascal Flatts. They are a country band with a pop twist. I like them alot. I have also downloaded OWL CITY which I am not sure I like yet and Leona Lewis's new album which is ok. I like some of her songs. But I think my favorite album right now is a band that has been around and that I love to death which came out with a new album recently. TRAIN -Save Me San Francisco. I really like their sound. Keeps me entertained on my walks to and from the theatre.

Killer WEEK.

These 8 shows weeks are a killer. It's Sunday night...well actually Monday morning and I am EXHAUSTED. I need to get my tolerance level up. Tomorrow is our DAY off. So I don't plan to do much. Just gonna BE LAZY!
This week not much happened. It's been really rainy and cloudy here in Basel. Food is really expensive. To give you an example. So we are staying in a HOTEL attached to a mall with a tiny food court. It has a sandwich/pizza place, a McDonald's, an Asian place and a SUBWAY. So being the starving actors that we are we try to eat cheap and as healthy as we can. So SUBWAY seems to be the best option for us since we don't stay in HOTEL'S with kitchens in them. So for a FOOT long sandwich combo it is 20 Swiss Fracs!!!! Now keep in mind that the SWISS FRANC is equivalent to the American Dollar. So it costs 20 bucks for SUBWAY! What about the 5....5 dollar....5 dollar footlooooong. Ughh. So anyway, we have been eating pretty poorly. We do have a fridge so I buy PB and J, cheese and crackers, cereal and milk..stuff like that. I can't wait for tomorrow since it's a "free" day to buy a real HOT decent meal at a restaurant.

This week I was introduced to the new ABC television series called FLASH FORWARD. It is really good and I am addicted. I pretty much just watch TV when I am not at the show. Its pathetic but it better than going out and spending money in this really expensive city.

I also have been going to the gym pretty regularly. YEAH! Since being on tour I have been letting myself go. It's SO HARD to eat healthy on tour especially OVER SEAS. I need to stop complaining and just do better...which I have ;) I'm debating if I want to go tomorrow. We will see how I feel.

Other than that. Things are going well. A tad boring and monotonous but not horrible. Let's see if next week will be more productive.

Last night I went and saw This Is It the Movie Documentary about Michael Jackson rehearsing for his upcoming tour before he died. I was moved by it. He truly was inspiring. I couldn't help but to laugh, dance, cry and cherish his last moments as an artists. He had so much passion for his work. It's something I want to have more of. I do find myself just going through the motions but when it comes down to it as artists we are HERE to move and inspire others and in order to do that we need that passion, L-O-V-E, and fire Michael had.

One of my favorite parts of the movie was when MJ said this :

Some people started to plan a Halloween party and BB Productions, our producers, got wind of it and decided to throw us some money($$$$) so that we get the food and booze and stuff. So last night after our 5 show weekend we had a WSS HALLOWEEN COSTUME BALL. It was so much fun and I had a blast.

So some might now this already but some might not. But I have a weird fasination with Scary/Horror movies. To feed my addiction in the thrill of being frightened I decided this week was SCARY MOVIE WEEK. So every night this week me and a couple of my friends from the cast get together and watch a scary movie.

My favorite so far was the Spanish Film El Orfanato (THE ORPHANAGE). It was so good!

I have to blog! I just got here in Basel Switzerland. I love this country. We sit down here for about a month. I used to live here 10 years ago when I served an LDS mission. LDS = Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint...name of my church. I was here and a little in France for 2 years spreading the GOOD WORD. Good memories here!

As soon as we got here I went into the huge mall attached to out AMAZING HOTEL called MIGROS which is a grocery store here in Switzerland and I found a cereal that I used to eat when I was here called Farmer Croc. DELICIOUS! When I saw it in the isle a flood of memories and feelings came back. It hit meet there in the cereal isle that I am blessed. To be here, with a job, to have friends and family who love me, to have had an experience of a mission, my health and too much more to mention.

This is cheesy but this reminds me of a song I sang in college called "GRATEFUL"

In a world that can bring pain

So I'm in Charleroi, Belgium. It's not very cute here. We are in a poopy hotel and a poopy city. We don't have internet. I am stealing it right now from this wireless network in the lobby. If we want wireless in the room it will be 16 Euro a day which is equivalent to 25 dollars a day. That is a bit much and we are here for only 4 days. We leave for Basel, Swtizerland on Monday and we sit down there for a month or so. So I am hoping when we get there things will be looking up with a better hotel and some INTERNET! Being in such a boring city with nothing to do with no internet is torture! I MIGHT GO CRAZY!

So on another note I have been thinking of a Halloween costume and I can't think of ANYTHING! I was thinking of doing something more traditional like Freddy, Frankenstein, Chucky, or something like that. I just don't want to wear a mask or alot of makeup all night. Anyways, if you have any ideas let me know!

Things to remember from Liege:

* Very small theatre 9x9 meters which we usually play on 13x13 or 11x11. With NO WING space!
* Was asked to do a lift that was important since someone called out of the show and FORGOT and got written up. Ughh!
* My roommate got MUGGED by knife point and got his iPod classic stolen.
* The really fun Carnival. Rode some really crazy rides
* The very tasty Belgium Waffles. YUM!
* Our "TONY" came on for the rumble scene barefoot because unfortunately got his shoe stuck under the set and to come out with no shoes on. OOOPS!

So my roommate on tour Travis is out from the show because he has a pulled hamstring or something. Today he came to the theatre to see our physical therapist and on his way back to the theatre he was MUGGED! There 4 men and one had a KNIFE! They took his iPod and nothing else. Thank goodness! He wasn't hurt but pretty shaken up as you can imagine.

NOTE TO SELF: NO walking alone in strange countries.

Also BIG NEWS....drum roll please.....MY NEPHEW CHAD is visiting me for Christmas! YEAH! I will have family here! So I will meet him here in Amsterdam for a day then he will come with me to Scheveningen and spend Christmas or at least Christmas Eve together since I have 2 shows on Christmas. Its going to be fun. I'm excited!

Not saying goodbye to Amsterdam which I love..but a see you later. I really liked this place.

MEXICAN NIGHT CAST FIESTA!

So one day I decided to find a Mexican restaurant by myself. I googled the closest Meixcan joint and I went. It is a really small taco shop called THE TACO SHOP. Anyway, while having dinner the guy running the place sounded American. So I started up a conversation with him. He moved here to Amsterdam 5 years ago to start his father's business here in Amsterdam. After I told him what I did I offered to get him tickets and he complied. Then in return he said he wanted to cater a cast party for us.....FOR FREE! I was all about it and made sure it happened. After arranging everything with some help of a few people it all worked out. A true success!

It's General Conference Weekend!

It's 179th Semiannual General Conference. Our church has a huge conference that is in Salt Lake City twice a year.

The First Presidency invites all members of the Church to participate or non-members alike by attending, viewing, or listening via television, radio, satellite, or Internet transmission at www.lds.org. Messages of inspiration and guidance will be delivered by the First Presidency, members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and other General Authorities and general officers of the Church.

I find these weekends very uplifting and inspiring. I will be working all weekend but will try to read what the Brethren have to say to us at a later date.

I really love and appreciate what these inspired men and women have to say. I feel there is alot of negativity in the world and a lack of HOPE. Their words provoke hope and faith. I'm grateful for my knowledge of God and the healing power of Jesus Christ in my life. Though far far from perfect I do long to better myself and be a good example of Christianity.

Went on a BIKE ride the other day. We went to go see the Anne Frank's house. It was so neat to be in the actual house. I've read her diary and seen the play. I really enjoy her story and look up to her. It was very emotional to be there but WOW! What an experience!

I am really excited I have never been there. Plus, I hear they have GREAT WEED and its legal! hahaha. Good thing I don't smoke.

Anyway, Tel-Aviv was an amazing place and i had a great time. I wish I had more time to visit more places but I wouldn't mind coming back. Yesterday was a great day though. I had a chance to go to church. Whats funny about church here is that its on Saturday to be respectful of the Jewish culture here in Israel. They met in a bomb shelter for Sacrament then moved into rented rooms at a Hostel Guest House that was around the corner for the rest of the meetings. It was a small branch but everyone was so warm and inviting. I really do miss going to church. My soul was truly fed yesterday. I hope that I can go more in the up coming months.

Such joy, such energy leap from this near perfect 50th anniversary production of West Side Story, and oh, the delight of this great musical in English. Conductor Donald Chan offers a crisp, spirited interpretation of Bernstein's score to which the Ra'anana Symphonette beautifully responds. Vocally this West Side Story is impeccable throughout, chorus and soloists alike, and you hear every word.

The dance numbers crackle not only because the dancers are technically awesome, but because they bring soul, and then some, to Jerome Robbins's still thrilling choreography. The company's white-clad interpretation of "Somewhere" brings a catch to the throat. For that, and for the direction overall Joey McNeelly is gloriously accountable. Renate Schmitzer's costumes are cool, the lighting by Peter Halbsgut enhances, and Paul Gallis's adaptable, see-through metal-scaffolding tenement set is both vulnerable and unyielding, like the characters and situations in this modern Romeo and Juliet.

New York in the 1950s. Two bickering teen gangs - the Jets and the Sharks. The Jets are American-born, and white. The Sharks are Puerto-Rican, first of the Hispanic immigrants. Racism and intolerance of the 'Other' rear their ugly heads (sound familiar?). American former-Jet Tony (Scott Sussman) and Puerto-Rican innocent Maria (Ali Ewoldt) fall in love. A rumble is determined to settle the question of turf. At the rumble tempers flare, knives flash, the Sharks' Bernardo (Tybalt ), and the Jets' Riff (Mercutio) lie dead on the ground and the end is preordained.

In particular: Sussman's Tony seemed to be on automatic pilot for Act I, but he pulled himself together and came through wonderfully in Act II. Ewoldt's crystalline soprano bewitches as does her passionate, grow- up-in-a-hurry Maria. Oneika Phillips' Anita runs a marvelous gamut from brassy to moving and as Chino, Antonio Jumenez rivets. During the final minutes of the play, the auditorium became utterly silent. That is tribute.

Masada/Dead Sea

Yesterday was one of those days where the world stops and you think...."Wow, I am blessed!" Being able to travel and experience what I did yersterday was a chance in a life time. We went to Masada which has a history behind it. If you are interested just click on "Masada." Then we went to The Dead Sea. Where we just floated. It was amazing. I guess because of the high salt content in the water when you get in the water your body automatically starts to float. You feel so buoyant! It's so weird and amazing at the same time. The view of the mountains and of the country Jordan on the other side of the sea is just breath taking. I was in awe the WHOLE DAY.

Mr. Joey McKneely. He is our director and Choreographer. He came out to Tel-Aviv for vacation and to check up on the show. Tonight we had a full dress rehearsal and a full house. Joey saw the show so we have notes then rehearsal tomorrow after a Press Call. So it should be fun to hear what he has to say after a couple of months of the show being out. I feel like we got better but there is always room to improve.

I was a day late calling my mom for her birthday....I know #1 rule to being a bad son. I am writing to publicly apologize to her. But to my defense I am in a really crappy hotel with shady internet and on her birthday it was a travel day so it was kind of a crazy busy day. Anyway, there is still no excuse to making something happen for her on her birthday.

I am sorry mommy! I still love you and I hope you had an amazing birthday. Whenever I get to come home to visit which might be sometime in the next decade hopefully I will take you out to dinner or something.

Being on tour really makes you really miss your family especially when you are on the other side of the world which seems to be the norm for me in my life nowadays. But the other day when I was hurting and seemed I had a rib out of place I just wanted my mom to take of me. Its been a long time since she did that but I still crave it sometimes ;)

After a 27 hour travel day we made it back to Madrid where we are here until tomorrow then we bus it to Santader which is a beach town in the north east part of Spain. We perform a couple shows there then off to Gijon where we do a couple more then off to Israel. EXCITED ABOUT ALL OF THAT!!!!

Update: I am feeling better. It seems my back is not in too much pain anymore....and got to lay by the pool today. Just glad not to be moving. I also have my own room for a couple of days. LOVING IT!

So I had to call out of the show today because of what we think is a rib our of place. It hurts so bad. I could barely sleep last night because when I lay down the pain is amplified. I felt bad being it the last show in Japan and we already had our Anita call out too because of a bummed foot. It was good to come back to the hotel take some pills and rest. I was a bit tired. We travel all day tomorrow for Spain and won't have a show till Saturday so I am hoping to be 100% by then.

Yesterday we went to Chad's(plays Tony) friend's fiance's parent's house. You following. They let us into their home and had a feast for us. We ate ALOT and later that night there was a fireworks display.
This month in Japan they have a fireworks festival and almost every night in different locations through out Tokyo they do fireworks. It was an hour long and really neat. It was a good NIGHT!

Songs and dances performed by the young and energetic cast literally exploded on stage and were truly overwhelming proving the authenticity of this production. Moreover, I was totally impressed by the high level of perfection as a musical, having choreography, music and drama merged into one entity. Based on the opening night performance, I like to seek into the allure of this masterpiece.

“Is this musical really created more than fifty years ago?” This is the first impression I had when I finished seeing the performance of “WEST SIDE STORY” this time.

In the West Side of New York City, there are two opposing gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. The Polish-Americans, the prior immigrants, and the emerging Puerto Rican immigrants come to hate each other because of the different skin colors and result in a tragedy. This tragic story still stabs deeply into our heart today. At the same time, reflecting upon the current state of the world where ethnic conflicts are still incessantly taking place, I felt terrified.

In the dark, finger-snaps by the boys ring through. The spectacular “Prologue” depicting the conflict of the Jets and the Sharks solely by dance leads to the meeting of the leading characters, Tony and Maria, and they fall passionately in love overcoming the racial barriers. Then, tragic events begin to happen in a chain reaction and the story develops in a stroke up till the end. Though I know how it ends, I always feel the heightening of tension and find it breathtaking every time I see it, which I believe is the proof how great this piece of work is. I was assured that it is an incomparable masterpiece and the impact of the original production in 1957 has not been lost even today.

Everlasting Allure of Dynamic Dances and

Diversities of Musical Numbers

When we say “WEST SIDE STORY,” we think of the dances. The dances created by Jerome Robbins, the genius, sublimating raw emotions to perfection in a dance form are absolutely overwhelming. A number of his choreographies also known through its film version now even give a sense of stylized beauty. But on stage, they reveal dramatic qualities more clearly and strike us hard with the sense of reality. “To express emotion through dance,” the principle of Robbin’s choreography, is alive in each and every dance numbers. Especially the confrontation dances by the two groups combined with the elaborate and dynamic choreographies in the aforementioned “PROLOGUE” and “THE DANCE AT THE GYM” are both breathtakingly superb.

And the music. The first act is pretty much “Masterpieces on Parade.” “MARIA,” “TONIGHT,” “AMERICA,” and “COOL.” The genuine musical standards come one after another. The composer is, of course, Leonard Bernstein. From a passionate love ballad, the Latin music, modern-jazz type, to a-la-opera, the wide varieties of musical numbers speak eloquently of his extraordinary talent. I could not help but being enchanted by the gorgeous sound of clear-cut melody lines. At the opening night performance, each and every musical number received impassioned applause.

Shifting drastically from the first act where one is intoxicated with the music, the tragic drama starts rolling quickly in the second act. I find the way this drama is structured truly skillful. The dance, music and drama are superbly allocated.

The Young Cast Show Their True Ability

The Classic Revives in the Present

The cast members of “West Side Story 50th Anniversary World Tour” in Japan are young and unknown chosen by audition, yet surely did fight a good fight. “Reckless act owing to youth” being the essence of this musical, the current cast added the reality to it. Especially, Ali Ewoldt who played Maria shone with her agile acting. After her lover, Tony, got killed, she went on to face the final scene with a firm stance, which I found admirable. Also, bold and lively songs and dances presented by Oneika Phillip playing Anita, the lover of the Sharks’ leader, were spectacular. (Both Tony and Maria are double-cast.)

The choreographies by Jerome Robbins were faithfully recreated by Joey Mckneely, who also directed the show. By his precise directions, he gave more depth to the dances putting importance on the dramatic elements. However, he did not keep it as a mere replica of the original production. Instead, he added a modern taste into the set and the costumes, and ventured to eradicate the look of the 50’s, which I found quite unique. By

trimming off anything unnecessary, he emphasized the seriousness of the drama in a simplified way. His straightforward direction supported by the good and straightforward acting of the cast proved to be successful. The veteran conductor Donald Chan presented the excellent performance by the orchestra, handling the changes of speed freely and beautifully. In its magnificent sound existed the real thrill of a musical.

This summer, a number of musicals have been invited to perform in Japan one after another, but this one proves to be truly “the Classic.” A half century has passed, yet its majestic presence still outshines all others. And when you see it live on stage, you will fully realize that the true value of this musical can only be appreciated when seeing in a theatre. It is the origin of the musicals. Don’t you dare miss it.

Last Night Bullfight

After 3 flights, 2 lay-overs, and a bus ride....over 25 hours of travel I have made it safe to Nagoya, Japan. It's so weird but I feel like I'm home. I kind of missed it.....I never thought I would think that. But everything is so familiar and I now remember how much I love the Japanese. I am excited to not be jet lagged....it is like 6am right and I've been up since 5am. Can't sleep! We have rehearsal this morning. I think I'm gonna be a wreck ;) Anyway, its fun to be back.

My last night in Madrid before this crazy travel day I went to a Bullfight. It was interesting. Very gruesome and sort of sad to see the bulls get killed. Here are some pics and some video I took of the event. Check out the Album:

Going Back to Japan

Tomorrow we leave for Japan. Thought I would never go back. Madrid was a blast. I had the opportunity to explore alot of Spain and I was impressed. From Barcelona to Segovia. I loved it all. Our 2 week lay-off was fun but now I am ready to get back to work and the gym ;)

I am aslo excited to see some old friends. YATTA!!!!

My home girl Alyssa is turning 7. Alyssa is my niece. I love her to death. She is so sweet and funny....and beautiful. I am so lucky to be her uncle.

So one of our Shark girls Bianca Seminara was let go right after our last show in Madrid. It was very sad news to hear indeed. In order to be PC and not share too much of my personal feelings I will say what was shared with me and what I heard. They needed someone to cover Anita and all the Sharks girls and had to hire someone else to do that. In doing so they had to let someone go and that was unfortunately Bianca.

She is a very beautiful, sweet, and talented girl. I will miss her smile the most. Everytime she would pass me no matter when or where she would smile ans brighten my day that much more. I wish her the best in her next endevour in moving to NYC. We will miss you B.

Barcelona was great. I had an amazing time there. The apartment was right on the beach and it was really nice. I love the beach! It made me miss home....MIAMI! So, funny story...being naked is not illegal in Barcelona so I saw alot of boobies and some naked people. Shocking at first but by the end I was completely naked....hahahaha just kidding. Uh, I am not ok with being naked in public. Don't worry....the pictures are clean. Highlight of the trip would have to be the beach, The Magic Fountain, and the day we rented bikes to explore the city. AMAZING!

I just came back from a Jason Mraz concert here in Madrid. It was a great experience. I love his music and he was even more amazing live. I had a great time. I got to Pamplona at midnight, partied all night, waited until the bulls ran at 8am then stayed up until our bus left back to Madrid at 4pm. It was a long day but an amazing TIME. Check out my Videos and pictures of my experience. One of the most memorable times of my life. I would do it again and again!

We went to the Zoo/Aquarium for one of our cast member's birthday(Chad). About 7 of us came along.....and it was a BLAST! I had such a great time. I call this the Disneyland syndrome. I feel like when you go there you get transported to your childhood and you feel like a kid again. That's how I felt when I went to the Zoo Aquarium yesterday. I loved every second of it.

It looks like my 2 week vacation is panning out really well. I have Running of the Bulls the 1st week. Barcelona the next week and the day we get back...guess who I'm going to see in concert in Madrid?

To Run or Not To Run?

I'm planning my 2 week vacation and in the first week I am going to Pamplona. I just got a bus ticket to Pamplona for the Running of the Bulls Festival. Since there is really no place to stay, I am leaving the night of the 7th with others from my cast and meeting a friend from the states there and staying up all night long until the running starts around 8am. Then leave that same day at 4pm. It's going to be a very very long day.

BUT the question is...should I run WITH the bulls or just watch on the side. Every year between 200 and 300 people are injured during the run although most injuries are contusions due to falls. The last death was in 2003 from a head wound from falling down but the last death directly from a bull was a 22 year old American who was gutted in 1995. OUCH!

I think I might just stand on the side and take pictures or maybe run BEHIND the bulls. lol. We will see. Should be an interesting experience.

Went to lunch today had Mexican at this restaurant called Barriga Llena (Full Belly). I have been craving it for a long time. I had Mole Enchiladas. They were GOOD! We also found this wall and decided to take a picture in front of it. Fun afternoon.

On The Steps of the Palace...

Being on this late schedule kind of sucks. We start the show at 10 pm because since it's an outdoor theatre we have to wait for it to get dark. So we don't get out till about 12:30 am. Don't get home till about 1am. And then have to wind down and then end up going to bed really late so we all tend to sleep in really late and miss out on the day. BUT I decided that I needed to go out and be a tourist. So me and 2 other friends of mine decided to go to the PALACIO REAL (The ROYAL PALACE). It was amazing. The best part was the inside but we were not allowed to take pictures. Each room of the palace had a specific function and was decorated by theme. The decor and some of the ceiling paintings were breath taking. Here is a picture of one of my favorite rooms I found on-line.

Me and 2 other guys bought tickets to Barcelona last night. We have 2 weeks off coming up and since we are probably the only people with no one visiting we decided to hang out and see what Barcelona is all about. We found flights for 0 Euro. How amazing is that!?!? I mean they do get you on the fees but the flight total came out to 30 Euro. We are also got a Hotel for 3 nights right on the BEACH! That not being bad either. I am so excited. It should be really FUN.

Yesterday was quite a day. The show started pretty normal until the dance at the gym which is early on in the show. Our Riff, Jablonski pulled a calf muscle. He went off stage grabbing his calf in pain. He continued to finish the scene and was called out of the show right after that. So for the rest of the show we had to put on his Under Study Alex who plays Diesel. So it was a mad rush to do a quick put in, costume changes, Mic and everything else. Since the understudy was on we had to put other people in also. So everyone was working backstage in between scenes they are not in to make sure they got it. It was mad house backstage but our cast came together and was prepared to go on. SO AMAZING. Props to everyone who stepped up to the plate last night. GOOD WORK! I wish Jablonski a quick recovery. So far we are thinking he will be out for about 2 weeks but hoping sooner.

So some of the cast and I were roaming the streets of Madrid until I fell upon someone I knew. Adrian was just hanging out in the streets of Madrid when I saw him. I knew he was in Spain but I didn't know how to get a hold of him so it was amazing that I just ran into him. He later came out with us to this club called Sol y Sombra. Adrian did Tokyo Disney with me. He and I shared the same part in the show Minnie Oh Minnie. It was fun catching up. He is just taking a month to travel Europe.

Voila! Lyon is OVER! SO SAD. I love France and kind of wish we were here for at least another week but its ok. WE will be back in France next year sometime.

For me Lyon was a great time. I had an opportunity to go to church yesterday. The same building and congregation I served in 10 years ago on my LDS mission. I didn't see anyone I knew but it was still cool to go and reminisce a little.

Now, we are off to Madrid, SPAIN for a 2 week run and a 2 week lay-off. Not sure what I am going to do for those 2 weeks just yet. But I'll keep you posted. Viva Espana!

Upun arrival here in Lyon a couple of us decided to take a train into Paris that night. The train was only 2 hours flat. I got in touch with an old friend from college(UVSC days) and she and her boyfriend put me up for 2 nights. First night I went to the Eiffel Tower by myself. The next day Sylvain and Becca took me all over Paris on bike to see the sites. This has bee a dream of mine to go here. I am so glad I did. Well WORTH IT! I need to go again when I have more time.
